	This project proposes the design of an immigration center that emphasizes the power of food as a cultural medium through which immigrants might strengthen their individual and collective identity, while meaningfully connecting with their neighborhood and beyond. A traditional community center program is abandoned for one oriented around qualities of "kitchen-ness"—that is, the various infrastructures and elements that support the cooking and sharing of food. Two distinct zones are created; a closed mass which protects from the high volume traffic of the street and offers more private and supportive programs, and a contrasting field condition in which the vibrant activity of a kitchen, dining hall, and market is on full display.

	This project proposes the design of a hybrid community center for both elderly adults and children, with the intention of bringing together two groups at the opposite ends of life’s spectrum through the medium of storytelling. Formally inspired by the Morgan Blair painting, Free Stuff / Misc / Etc / Ghosts, the floor plan is composed of the repetition, rotation, and cropping of a single plan figure to generate a richly varied configuration of interior and exterior space. This operation is tracked through the building in the distinctive recurrence of curving, concrete masses, shingled wall planes, and clipped, graphic partitions. The resulting spaces evoke the whimsical familiarity of a "same, same but different" world which mediates the individual and collective needs of the old and young.

With a mandate to protect one copy of every published book in perpetuity, the British Public Library (BPL) necessitates a very big box—an expansive archival space capable of holding a projected 456,557 m3 of books by the year 2320. This project meets these spatial and logistical challenges with the question of institutional resilience. How might the BPL ensure ongoing funding, space, and care for an endeavor that will play out over many lifetimes and unpredictable generational events? By proposing an overhaul of the current site and the construction of a sublime-scale building capable of holding the entire projected storage volume, the project opens up an entirely new role for the BPL as real estate manager. 

	As the initial footprint of the archive only occupies a fraction of the site, the books make way for a myriad of rental possibilities in the underground for programs whose typological needs also involve an open, dark, and stable environment: including movie theaters, sports facilities, data centers, and warehouse storage. In this way, the project transcends the provocation of the prompt by imagining an architecture that facilitates a dynamic world of public-private partnerships—providing an unexpected platform and welcome destination for a wide array of user groups.

The housing ecosystem of New York City is dominated by the nuclear family apartment. Ironically, the Citizens Housing &#38;amp; Planning Council states that only 17% of NYC residents conform to this typological identity, with at least 57% dwelling alone or in groups with other unrelated adults—often in pursuit of more affordable rent. What’s more, a recent study by Praxis exposed an unsurprisingly significant number of “illegal” households, representing the highly precarious living arrangements that are unaccounted for by these official surveys. This condition is amplified in Manhattan where the high value of land has exacerbated such dwelling arrangements, rendering the landlord in a position of utmost power. As a result, domestic misfits who don’t conform to the nuclear family ideal are forced into the shadows throughout the city, unable to find truly flexible or affordable housing downtown.


 &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; This project claims a series of developable lots across lower Manhattan as sites for an interconnected network of housing which offers an alternative to the hegemony of profit-driven developments that favor the nuclear family.

A new dwelling paradigm is proposed, predicated on the assumption of diverse domestic needs, including more flexible options for length of stay. The new subject of this typology, the “lodger,” is inspired by the temporary dwellers of the historic Tenement Houses and Residential Hotels—now bygone typologies that once offered a wide range of dwelling options based on a gradient of housing infrastructure and the professionalization of domestic labor. This project invokes the diversity of these domestic arrangements as a means to translate the collective ownership of land into an expanded menu of inclusive and cooperative modes of living downtown.

︎︎︎ Perspective of public arrival to the building from a boardwalk which connects the site to the ferry and shoreline.

	
This project seeks to move the pre-occupation of architecture beyond human-centered design by addressing the evolving coastline, prioritizing the lives of plants and animals, and imagining the enduring function of a building (before and) after human occupation. Concrete shell structures emerge from Hallet’s Cove, acting together as a wave break and an underwater habitat for fish and other wetland fauna. The proposal depicts the current adaptation of the "building" as housing through the adherance of contrasting, barnacle-like structures. These housing structures imagine a new type of cooperative living, where typically private programs are inverted as shared and celebrated spaces of collectivity.
